About Our Philosophy
Since its founding in 1940, the Eastern Cooperative Recreation School has offered recreation events based on these beliefs:
Play is for everyone, for it provides us with meaningful balance within our lives. Dancing, singing, playing games and creating are fundamental to humankind. These universal activities enable us to establish rapport with others across cultural or language differences.
Recreation is important for its own sake and is valuable as a practical, experiential tool for use by teachers and community volunteersalike as they work with people.
Recreational activities allow individuals to grow at their own pace and to participate at their own level of development without being made to feel either superior or inferior. Learning by adventure and discovery stimulates unique and personal progress.
About Our Programs
ECRS chooses beautiful and informal country settings that lend themselves to the friendly and lovely spirit in each of our annual events. A typical year includes a Summer School (7 days) and a Winter Workshop (5 days) as well as a variety of camping weekends, one-day in town events and retreat-style weekend programs. We offer a variety of enticing activities, starting with games, folk dance music/song leadership, theory, dramatics and crafts. Additional activities include: play parties, exploring outdoors, storytelling and of course, a creative and lively children's program. There is ample room for free-time events where participants are encouraged to lead. All programs are modestly priced and some scholarships are available.
About Our Leadership Development Process
ECRS has served as a training ground for many successful professionals and volunteers in the field of
recreation leadership. To learn more (CLICK HERE).
