What is ECRS Winter Adventure?

A new way to connect

ECRS Winter Adventure is a creative and joyous alternative holiday experience. There’s nothing tedious or tiresome here. Young and old will be thoroughly engaged in four days filled with a diverse array of classes.

It’s about community

Each evening, we gather together as a group to enjoy a mix of activities for all ages: games, dancing, informal dramatics, sing-alongs and making music together, and good conversation. After an evening snack, there are a variety of “late-night activities.” Not a fan of typical New Year’s Eve parties? Celebrate the uniquely ECRS way, with enough warmth, light, and fun to last through next year.

Eating is a time to connect, too

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are buffet-style, with everyone eating together in groups at large round tables. Connect with one special friend, or with a different one of your ECRS “family” at each meal! Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available.

How will you use your unscheduled time?

Board games? Jigsaw puzzles? Hanging out by the fireplace? Taking a nap? Take a walk or other outdoor activities? Explore Corning or other nearby towns?

The ‘Y’ at Watson Woods

The Y at Watson Woods (Watson Homestead) is a conference center on 600 beautiful acres near Corning, NY. We’re ideally situated for winter sports and local attractions, including sledding, hiking, and the nearby Corning Museum of Glass. NOTE: The Y at Watson Woods is wheelchair accessible.

From December 27 thru January 1 only, a message can be taken for you at: The Y at Watson Woods 9620 Dry Run Road Painted Post, NY 14870 607-962-0541

Accommodation Options

Main Lodge: Dorm-style rooms with twin or bunk beds, and shared bath; guests must bring sheets and towels.

West Wing (attached to Main Lodge):
Hotel-style rooms with two double beds, private bath, and carpeting; all linens (blankets, sheets, towels, and pillows) are supplied.

Hillside (a short walk up a hill from Main Lodge): There’s a limited number of rooms with shared baths in this two-story house; guests must bring sheets and towels.

Meals

Winter Adventure includes a hearty breakfast, lunch and dinner every day beginning with dinner on December 27th and wrapping up with breakfast on January 1st. All meals are served family-style in the "dining room" (part of the great hall). Coffee, tea and hot chocolate are available all day. Snacks are served after Evening Program and feature a smorgasbord that often includes yogurt, hummus, fruit and veggies and chips with dip. The final meal is breakfast on January 1, followed by a closing program.

Vegetarian or gluten-free? Watson supplies limited vegetarian and gluten free options (you must specify when you register). If you have significant dietary restrictions and want to bring your own food to supplement the family-style offerings, there is a refrigerator and microwave available.

You’ll be able to register for all classes right after you complete the event registration. Note that you will be able to swap classes the first night of Winter Adventure.

Morning first-period classes

All 4 days: International Folk Dance (Patricia Williams)

Come connect with cultures from around the world through dance. Whether fast or slow, in circles or in lines, serene, joyful, or anything in between, every dance can move us in body, mind, and spirit. Great music, great exercise, great fun, great community! No partner necessary, and absolutely no need to do them “right”! Age 12+.

All 4 days: Leadership Playground (Kim Neubauer)

Welcome experienced and aspiring leaders! We’ll unpack ECRS’s magic and emerge with insights, ideas, sharpened skills, and greater self-awareness. You are encouraged to propose – in advance – an activity (game, dance, song, craft, or discussion) you’d like to lead (send to kneubauer123@yahoo.com). Come to play, lead, reflect, learn, and to become an integral part of ECRS’s future. Age 15+.

Class size is limited. Please register in advance. We will keep a wait list once we have reached capacity.

Days 1-2: Chair Yoga (Judi Powers)

Stretch your body, relax and feel renewed with Chair Yoga. Yoga poses and exercises done in a chair or standing next to a chair. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a water bottle. Age 12+.

Days 3-4: Breathe and Be (Heather Klemanski)

This 2-day class is a gentle introduction to mindfulness through breath, easy movement, and self-compassion. You’ll explore simple practices to slow down, reconnect, and manage stress. The final session will close with a calming sound bath. No experience is needed. Come as you are. Age 12+.

All 4 days: Children's Program/Preschool (Lisa Natale)

Why should the grown-ups have all the fun? ECRS offers a completely integrated program for children ages 2-11 during two class periods. Many activities mirror the cooperative play that ECRS is built on. Children may learn new games, create new crafts, sing silly songs, or even get the chance to share activities they have fun doing at home. Depending on age and interest, they may take a field trip to experience the more kid-friendly adult classes! Children’s Program is first and third periods only. A cooperatively-led Children’s Program staffed by parents and volunteers is 2nd period.

Note: Children are expected to stay for the entire program, and are the responsibility of their guardians at all other times.

Morning, second-period classes

All 4 days: Sketch 101: From Blank Page to Big Laughs (Allie Cliffe)

Turn your everyday observations into laugh-out-loud sketches! You’ll learn the fundamentals of sketch comedy writing through a proven step-by-step process. We’ll work in small groups to craft original three-minute scenes from the funny moments hiding in your daily life and (if we have time) analyze classic sketches from Saturday Night Live and other comedy legends for inspiration. No experience required—just bring your sense of humor and willingness to play. Age 12+.

Days 1-2: Sacred Circle Dances (Sharon Underberg)

Circle Dancing is a folk art, a new branch from the thick old trunk of International Folk Dance. Danced together around a central focus point, these tend to be simpler dances, for a longer period of time. This encourages each of us to allow ourselves to be held by the circle, and to sink into the rhythmic movement, allowing our minds to relax. We will learn a number of these dances and, if the group desires, create a sacred circle dance of our own. Open to all levels of experience and fitness. Age 12+.

Days 1-2: Games! (Lane Neubauer with Heather Klemanski assisting)

Lots of games! Some new, some old, some active, some quiet, lots of laughter, ALL FUN! This class will consist of games for all ages and abilities. It will include ladership strategies so participants will be able to bring the ECRS philosophy of inclusion and fun into the groups they are part of outside of Winter Adventure. Age 12+.

Days 1-2: Crafts: Deck the Halls (Kay Gering)

Join the merriment as we create decor for our New Year’s Eve celebration. Follow preplanned designs or bring your festive imaginations to make a winter wonderland for a Peace- and Wonder-full New Year. Age 12+.

Class size is limited. Please register in advance. We will keep a wait list once we have reached capacity

Days 3-4: Empathy Games (Rob Eames)

In this interactive workshop, we’ll use empathy games to explore interpersonal connection & support. Through play, personal reflection, and group discovery, we’ll get a felt sense of what it means to be accompanied by others. Each activity builds toward deeper connection and a shared understanding of the meaning & preciousness of interdependence. Come curious, leave connected. Age 12+.

Days 3-4: Joy of Movement: Moving to Heal (Judi Powers)

Let’s Dance and stretch your body’s way. Music and dance will be fun, playful, and healing. Come enjoy! All levels invited, you will be encouraged to modify to your body’s needs. All ages welcome.

All 4 days: Cooperative Children's Program/preschool

Group activities organized and staffed by parents and volunteers. We will create a sign-up sheet and there will be a room designated with some materials to share.

Afternoon classes

Days 1-2: Relax with Board - Word Games (Bonnie Ostrofsky)

Enjoy relaxing with friends over new or old games. Play an old favorite, or learn a new game. We’ll bring Bananagrams, Upwords, Scrabble, Boggle, Backgammon, Quiddler, Rummikub, and more. You can also bring your favorite game, teaching others the basic rules and strategies and show them why you love to play it! Age 12+.

Days 1-2: Small Scenes (Isaac Lebwohl-Steiner)

If you’ve seen a play or a movie and imagined yourself as one of the characters, if you miss your time in the school play, or if you just want to be someone else for a minute, here is your chance! Comedy, drama, we have it all. Using scripts (no memorizing required!) we will rehearse, perform, and discuss a collection of scenes. Explore, discover, and create! Age 12+.

Class size is limited. Please register in advance. We will keep a wait list once we have reached capacity.

Days 1-2: Hat Game (Josh and Rachael Silverbauer)

The Hat Game is equal parts ice-breaker, improv lab, and rapid-fire creativity workshop. Before we begin, every participant secretly writes a brief activity prompt (anything from “re-enact a famous movie scene” to “design a new yoga pose”) and drops it into—yes—a literal hat. Across two sessions we draw prompts at random and bring them to life, using structured facilitation techniques that turn spontaneity into a learnable skill set. Age 12+.

Class size is limited. Please register in advance. We will keep a wait list once we have reached capacity.

Days 3-4: Improv Games (Isaac Lebwohl-Steiner)

Are you ready? No? Perfect! Come make it up as you go and fake it until you realize you’ve already made it! We’ll learn a little, play a lot, and laugh too much. No experience with improvisational theater needed; newcomers and experienced improvisers are equally welcome. Age 12+.

Days 3-4: Explore Your Encore (Reed Dewey)

Explore your post career ideas for life with others to gain knowledge and insights. Think about where you are now and where you want to go. Geared to anyone age 50 and older – even if it’s been a while since you’ve retired. Life transitions in later life present their own challenges but also create new opportunities. Leave this Mini with new ideas, insights, and an action plan for 2026! We’ll have a combination of short presentations, group discussions, and breakouts. A number of resources and planning tools will be provided. Age 50+.

Days 3-4: Rock Opera Build (Josh and Rachael Silverbauer)

This mini-lab guides participants through the creative arc of producing an original rock opera—from seed idea to song building. We’ll explore narrative structure, map story beats to musical moments, write lyrics that drive plot, and experiment with building songs that give characters their own voice. If you have an idea Josh will help you put it to music and Rachael will help you find the words! No prior music theory required—just enthusiasm and a willingness to sing a rough draft. Age 12+.

Class size is limited. Please register in advance. We will keep a wait list once we have reached capacity.

All four days: Children's Program/Preschool (Lisa Natale)
