SUMMARY:Winter Adventure 2021
DESCRIPTION:Winter Adventure 2021\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Start: December 27\, 2021 @ 4:00 pmEnd: January 1\, 2022 @ 10:30 amAll times are US Eastern (New York\, USA) \n \nScroll down for class descriptions and event registration\n \n \n \n \n \n A new way to connectECRS Winter Adventure is a creative and joyous alternative holiday experience. There’s nothing tedious or tiresome here. Young and old will be thoroughly engaged in four days filled with a diverse array of classes (improv to introspection\, crafts to collaborating games\, and much more!). \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Fun for all ages (kids\, too!)A dedicated children’s program (staff-led for two class periods; cooperative-led for the remaining period) makes sure our youngest members have as much fun as the grown ups during class times. \nUnscheduled timeThere are breaks and free time for relaxing or leading your own recreational activities (or exploring in the woods or going into town). \nIt’s about communityEach evening\, we gather together as a group to enjoy a mix of activities for all ages: games. dancing\, music-making\, informal dramatics\, sing-alongs\, and good conversation. After an evening snack\, there are a variety of “late night activities.” Not a fan of typical New Year’s Eve parties? Celebrate the uniquely ECRS way\, with enough warmth\, light\, and fun to last through next year \nEating is a time to connect\, tooMeals are buffet-style\, with everyone eating together in groups at large round tables. Connect with one special friend\, or with a different one of your ECRS “family” at each one! Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available. \nEvent costs\n\n\n\n\nHousing\n\n\nTuition\n\n\nFood\n\n\n\nWest Wing (2-4 in room): $430/roomWest Wing (single): $650Main Lodge (2-4 in room): $215/roomMain Lodge (single): $265/roomHillside (2 in room): $340/roomHillside (single): $540/room\nAdult plus tuition: $350Adult full tuition: $250Adult reduced tuition: $150Child (3-17): $125Child (0-2): free\nAdult: $200Child (3-17): $100Child (0-2): free\n\n\n\nNote that there will be a $25/per person fee added to cover your rapid Covid test.  \n \n \n \n \n \n Covid-19 policy\nEveryone  attending WA will need to show they are fully vaccinated. The only exception will be those children too young to be vaccinated (under five\, per current CDC recommendations). \nIf you cannot meet this requirement\, know that we love you and will miss you. We look forward to seeing you again but can’t risk you getting sick! \nUPDATE 11-21-2021 – We will not require proof of a negative PCR test at event check in. We will be rapid-testing everyone at sign in and then again on the 29th. We will be using the CLIA-ceryified\, FDA EU-approved Abbott BinaxNow Point of Care antigen test\, which has a test sensitivity of 97.1% and specificity of 98.5% (and which we have already purchased!). See the full Covid policy below for full details. \nThe board will reevaluate the state of Covid the first week in December. If we cannot meet CDC requirements for a safe event and need to cancel\, we will directly notify each person registered and return all fees collected. Note that because of the lateness\, we will be unable to host a virtual event this year.  \n \n \n \n \n \n Full Covid policy (click to expand for the most up-to-date details)\n Vaccination requirement\n\nEvery person needs to be fully vaccinated to attend\, except children too young to be eligible (0-4).  This means anyone age five and older (according to the newest CDC guidelines). If you aren’t able to get vaccinated for medical or other reasons\, we’ll miss you and look forward to seeing you when we’ve conquered COVID.\nWe will require proof of vaccination as part of the online event registration. You will be able to upload a scanned copy or cell phone photo of your CDC vaccination card. We will have a designated person if you need help with this.\nWe will require you to show your vaccine card at event registration on 12/27/2021. \nWe strongly recommend you have your Covid booster (if you’re eligible) and your annual flu shot\, as well! Because immunity wanes\, the Covid booster can increase your protection by a factor of five to seven. Protecting against flu and other colds is especially important so your immune system is ready to do battle with Covid and not distracted by the great-great-great-great grandchild of the Spanish flu.\nWe will have a mural at Watson where we can post and celebrate our post-vaccine thoughts! \n\nTesting requirements\nEveryone will take a CLIA-certified\, FDA emergency use-approved antigen rapid-test during sign in (the Abbott BinaxNow Point of Care test\, which we have already purchased). Before receiving negative result\, you must:\n\nWear a mask at all times\nMove into their rooms as usual (if sharing a room with a person who did not come in their car\, both should be masked when in their room (although that can’t be monitored roommates would have to agree to that possibility and choose their roommate wisely).\nSocially distance and/or socialize outside\nRefrain from singing\nEat meals 6 feet apart from anyone else\n\nDuring the eventEveryone will take a follow-up rapid test on the 29th. Look here for additional details about what happens before you get a negative rapid test result or if you test positive. \nEvent protocols\n\nEveryone will fill out a daily attestation that they are symptom free. This will be a simple questionnaire – part of our WA ritual.\nAnyone with Covid symptoms will need to quarantine and take extra precautions until testing negative (two rapid tests)Quarantine will most likely be in designated rooms – details TBD“Extra precautions” to include masking\, staying six feet distant or outside\, not being in a room with other people\, etc. There are several locations in Painted Post that offer free testing for people with Covid symptoms. Because rapid tests are less sensitive than PCR tests\, we will require a follow-up negative test to release you from quarantine. We will share more details closer to the event. Many colleges used quarantine dorms to keep their students safe in the school year before the vaccine was available. \n\nMasks and more\nNo Masking requirement – but you be you! While we will not require attendees to be masked during the event\, if you feel the need for extra protection\, there are plenty of comfortable and highly effective KN95 or N95 masks available. These masks are highly effective at protecting the wearer as well as those around you. There are even masks made for singing (see here).  \nTackling ALL bugs with hand washing and sanitizerWe will have lots of unscented hand sanitizer readily available: about every 20 feet around the main room\, several in the Rec hall and at least one in each classroom. If we are holding hands for dances\, touching each other in games and handling scissors\, chairs etc. we will ask people to wash hands with warm soapy water or sanitize between each dance\, game\, etc. This is less for covid and more for flu\, colds\, stomach bugs\, sore throat’s\, etc. Those have been BIG problems at SEVERAL WAs and this isn’t a time to flirt with anything that could be misconstrued as Covid \nWhile at Watson – staffing safety\nNote that neither New York state nor county laws allow employers with under 100 employees to require vaccinations\, and employers are not allowed to even ask about vaccination status. Because we cannot require Watson staff to be vaccinated\, we will instead require all staff take the following additional precautions – just in case! \n\nWatson Homestead staff will be required to wear N95 or KN95 masks whenever indoors.\nPractice frequent hand hygiene\nStay 6 feet away from all conferees unless masked\nAttest on paper or an app EVERY DAY to the health questions\nClean rooms when they are unoccupied and\, if possible\, air the room for a few minutes after cleaning.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Covid-related FAQs (click to expand)\n Meals at Winter Adventure are usually served “buffet style.” Will this change in light of Covid?\nWe still plan on serving meals buffet-style. Although the CDC initially recommended that people sanitize their groceries\, it has long been recognized that Covid is spread by air\, not by “fomites” (virus that is on an object). The risk of transmitting Covid via buffet-style dining is negligible. See the World Health Organization’s page on getting Covid from food or food packaging. Note that Watson staff will be masked and each person will serve themselves.  \nHow about ice cream at New Years’ Eve?\nNew Years Eve ice cream sundaes will be switched to individual ice cream bars (Klondike\, ice cream sandwiches\, Dove\, cookie sandwiches\, individual cups) and various popsicles. More than one per person\, or course\, so we can all still gorge! \nAny other changes to the usual Winter Adventure activities?\nWe will likely be modifying some of our classes and group programming to allow for more socially distancing\, in general. This may mean singing in a big circle in the main room or in smaller “pods” instead of close around the fire. We haven’t figured everything out\, but we’re working on it! If you have suggestions about things that have worked with groups you’re involved in\, email our de facto Covid-compliance officer (a writer at the Broad Institute\, which was tapped by the CDC to help with tracking and mitigating the Covid pandemic) at allie@ecrs.org. \nAre rapid tests accurate enough to keep us safe?\nIt’s well-known that rapid antigen tests are not as sensitive as PCR test (i.e. there’s a greater a chance that a rapid tests will give a false negative result even if you do have some Covid in your body). However\, rapid antigen tests are more accurate the more viral load you have in your body – i.e. when you are symptomatic or if Covid has been replicating in your body long enough to really build up. This is exactly when you are most contagious! \nBecause we will want to identify people who are actually contagious at WA\, rapid antigen tests are the best thing to use at the event.  \nAre you sure you will have enough rapid tests? I have heard they are ins short supply\nWe have already reserved 160 CLIA-approved\, FDA Emergency Use-approved Abbott BinaxNow Point of Care tests. These tests have a sensitivity of 97.1% and specificity of 98.5% and take 15 minutes for results. You can read more about these rapid tests by clicking here. \nWill you be testing temperatures?\nFevers are not\, by themselves\, a good predictor of Covid (see this in the NYTimes). That is why we will be relying on a layered approach (vaccination\, a combination of testing\, isolation and other precautions if feeling unwell) rather than requiring everyone to take their temperature several times a day.  \nWe will require everyone to attest that they are symptom-free every day. \nCan you guarantee I won’t get Covid at WA?\nWe cannot guarantee you won’t get Covid. However\, if you are fully vaccinated\, the chances that you will get Covid are significantly smaller than the chances you will be in a car accident on the way to or from Watson Homestead. Vaccinated people who do get Covid are much\, much less likely to get very sick. If the thought of catching the flu or a cold hasn’t kept you from WA in the past\, it really shouldn’t keep you away this year. See No\, Vaccinated People Are Not ‘Just as Likely’ to Spread the Coronavirus as Unvaccinated People for a great summary.  \nHave a Covid-related question about in-person WA?\nEmail allie@ecrs.org our resident astrophsysicist-turned-biomedical writer and Covid resource. She’ll answer you directly and post the answer here. \n \n \n \n \n \n Class descriptions and leaders\nClick on the class title to get the full class description\, materials list and requirements (such as age and class size limits). Classes may be subject to change\, if necessary. You’ll be able to register for all classes right after you complete the event registration. Note that you will be able to swap classes the first night of WA and that spots for classes with limited class sizes will be decided by lottery. \n \n Morning first period classes\n \n \n \n \n \n All 4 days: International Dances (Patricia Williams)\n Learn International Folk Dancing\, with an emphasis on cultural appreciation\, physical movement\, community-building\, and fun. Their use on textiles\, jewelry\, carvings and architecture has broadened in the last century. The Adinkra symbols represent metaphors or attributes often tied to proverbs. The symbols are not only visually pleasing. They can inspire complex reflection upon poetic messages. I would like to share my enthusiasm and spirit of introductory learning through creating small Adinkra style symbols from cardboard for rubbing patterned arrangements on paper. \nWe will: Ponder a proverb together. Check out some traditional Adinkra symbols and their attributes. Demo\, cut and glue cardboard shapes creating rubbing stamps. Use colored rubbing sticks to repeat and alternate shared symbols into creative patterns and messages. \nClass requirements/materialsBring strong scissors and a glue gun\, if you have them. \nClass limited to 20 peopleAge 14+ \n \n \n \n \n \n Morning second period classes\n \n \n \n \n \n Two 2-day minis: The Write Stuff (Beverly Pincus)\n If you can write you can WRITE!!  In this class we will start with some original exercises designed to stimulate creativity and break through writing blocks. Want to learn what part of your brain houses your imagination\, or visit a word museum? After some playful warmups you will be given a series of prompts to write what you know best —the stories of your lives. In a safe\, supportive\, nurturing\, and confidential environment you will share these stories with each other.  There will also be an optional opportunity to read your work to the larger ECRS community in a special evening showcase.  \nThis class is appropriate for people who have always wanted to write and never thought they could\, experienced writers with a regular writing practice\, and everyone in between.  Please commit to both days of  each mini (though you can choose to take only one mini – or both!). Come and discover your authentic voice and the written expression of your deep heart.  \nCourse materials/requirementsPlease bring a journal or notebook to write in and something to write with. Participants are strongly encouraged to use paper and pen\, though writing on a computer is allowed. Please come with a curious mind and an open heart.  \nAge 16+Class limited to 16 people \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: The Joy of Movement (Judi Powers and Marko Schmale)\n Do you enjoy music? Does it make you want to move and flow with the beat? Judi and Marko will lead us in some exercises and dance to explore ways we can enjoy the rhythms and stretch our entire bodies. Fun for all ages and abilities. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: Informal Dramatics (Lane Neubauer)\n Have you ever wanted to experience being someone other than yourself or perhaps an animal or an inanimate object!  Participants will be encouraged to use their imagination to bring whatever they choose to life.  What does a table think when a flower is put on its top?  How does a lion react when a rabbit tries to become its friend?  How would the story go if your favorite fairy tale or fable had a different outcome?  This course will consist of creative dramatic warm ups\, exercises and games and culminate in the creation of small group skits to be performed for the rest of the group. \nClass requirementsAge 11 and upNo cap on group size ( the more the merrier!); minimum is 12. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: Outdoor Meditation (Dan Nicholson and Myriam Siftar)\n Are you searching for an antidote to screens and technology? This Mini will help you disconnect\, unplug\, and refocus your attention to the natural environment. We will walk silently together\, “center” ourselves\, become more aware of our senses\, and even lower our blood-pressure! \nWe will walk on trails (or on plowed roads if there is deep snow)\, alongside creeks\, and to a nearby waterfall. The leaders will give prompts for being present and mindful of the rich sensory experiences of the forest\, the air\, the water\, and the earth below us. On both days\, time will be set aside for participants to share reflections of their experience with the group. \nClass requirementsWear clothing appropriate for winter hiking. All ages and abilities welcome! \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Improv (Isaac Lebwohl-Steiner)\n Learn the basic tenets of improv and the core ideas. \nNo materials required. No class size or age restrictions! Opportunity for guest leadership if interested. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Leadership: Skill or Art? (Lane Neubauer)\n What does it take to be an ECRS leader? How does ECRS leadership differ from leadership in other situations? This two day class will examine what it means to be an effective leader in any situation\, but will put particular emphasis on ECRS leadership philosophy. This will be an interactive experience focusing on identifying one’s leadership abilities\, with the opportunity for feedback and practice. Some group dynamic theory will be included. \nThe course will consist of activities designed to develop and/or improve one’s leadership potential and impact. Through a combination of experiential exercises\, structured fun activities and discussions\, participants will identify and practice leadership strategies for building and maintaining a cohesive productive group. \nCourse materials/requirementsAge 13 and up \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Song and Joke Swap (Jacquie Adain)\n We’ll take turns leading a song and telling a (politically correct – or at least not offensive)  joke. Instruments optional. This was so successful online that I would like to do it in person which would be even more enjoyable. \nParticipants will construct the course content by their contributions. This is not intended to replace or interfere with late-night-sing but rather to give those who can’t stay up late another opportunity to sing with a group.  \nCourse materials/requirementsRise Up Singing or Rise Again songbooks are great to have\, but not required. \n \n \n \n \n \n				 Afternoon classes\n \n \n \n \n \n All 4 days: Small Scenes (Isaac Lebwohl-Steiner)\n Finally the curtain rises again!! ECRS offers a completely integrated program for children ages 5-11 during two class periods. Many activities mirror the cooperative play that ECRS is built on. Children may learn new games\, create new crafts\, sing silly songs\, or even get the chance to share activities they have fun doing at home. Depending on age and interest\, they may take a field trip to experience the more kid-friendly adult classes! Children’s Program during the remaining class period will be cooperative-led. \nNote: Children are expected to stay for the entire program\, and are the responsibility of their guardians at all other times. To help finalize staffing\, this program will be offered only if children are registered by December first. \nNote that we will be adjusting the children’s program to meet current CDC guidelines. All children eligible for a vaccine by December 2021 will be required to be vaccinated. \nPreschool agedIf you have youngsters ages 2–4\, we will provide supervised play for them during two class periods. Please register in advance.\n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Origami for Peace with Kay Gering\n \n\nOrigami cranes became a symbol of peace after a young Japanese girl named Sadako Sasaki folded 1600 cranes hoping her wish for peace would be granted. We can wish for peace in Ukraine and throughout the world as we fold cranes of varying sizes and colors. Other origami forms will also be available for those who would like to try another shape. The rest of the workshop will be participants writing to a series of prompts. Examples include write about a family dinner\, write about a secret\, write in the voice of one of your body parts. Let’s use our brilliance & creativity rooted in cooperative playful community to design visual message boards that speak strongly to what we want to change\, by offering solutions to the challenges we are facing. We will begin this process by voicing & writing down the issues followed by envisioning how solutions would appear; then in the context of the class\, what images\, words & art would make clear\, strong poster presentations. We will be working with paper cutting\, tearing\, layering (as with tissue paper)\, collaging (using magazines\, calendars\, etc)\, paints\, markers. Please bring scissors (both fine & large)\, rulers\, magazines\, news papers\,etc. \n \n \n \n \n \n All 4 Days: Singing For Every Body and Soul (Roberta Kirn)\n Roberta Kirn is a singer\, percussionist\, and dancer who loves to share easy-to-learn songs and chants from around the world as well as experimenting with improvisational Circlesongs and body percussion. Her most important teachers have been Ysaye Barnwell and Bobby McFerrin. After some playful warmups you will be given a series of prompts to write what you know best —the stories of your lives. Participants will be encouraged to use their imagination to bring whatever they choose to life. What does a table think when a flower is put on its top? How does a lion react when a rabbit tries to become its friend? How would the story go if your favorite fairy tale or fable had a different outcome? This class will consist of a variety of dramatic warm ups\, exercises and games and will culminate each day with the creation of small group skits to be performed for the rest of the group. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Transition with Intention (Reed Dewey)\n This mini addresses any kind of life transition and how to successfully move from where you are to where you want to go. A number of resources and planning tools will be provided. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4:Improv (Isaac Lebwohl-Steiner)\n Are you ready? No? Perfect! Comedy\, drama\, we have it all. Using scripts we will rehearse\, perform\, and discuss a collection of scenes. Explore\, discover\, and create! \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: Israeli dance (Sharon Underberg)\n A 2 day dive into Israeli dance\, exploring the diversity and origins of Israeli dance. We’ll learn dances from the various cultural traditions that have influenced Israeli dance. Dances will range from the classics of the 40’s and 50’s to modern day and will vary in pace and complexity. For dancers of all levels. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: Table Games (Jack Marquess)\n Table games will be introduced in various ways conducive to different learning styles. Several games will be introduced each day and you will have the option to learn and play the games of your choice. Once introduced in class\, the games will be available in free time and late-night evening program. Some games will be new to ECRS\, others not played in years\, and a current favorite or two. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: Singing Together is Fun! (Barb Siftar)\n Yes it is! And silly\, and beautiful\, and good for your health and soul. It’s also one of the six pillars of ECRS activities. This two-day singing mini will include lots of types of songs that are good for singing together. Class may include singing and clapping games\, lots of rounds\, harmonies\, improvisations\, soundscapes and vocal warm-ups. We will learn by listening\, call and response and also word sheets and music. Ability to read music or prior experience not required. Open to all ages. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Games (Lane Neubauer)\n Lots of Games!! Some new\, some old\, some active\, some quiet\, lots of laughter\, ALL FUN! This class will consist of games for all ages and abilities. Leadership strategies will be included so participants will be able to bring the ECRS fun into groups they are part of outside of Winter Adventure. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Joy of Movement (Judi Powers and Marko Schmale)\n Explore and unleash your potential through joyful movement. Engage your senses and listen to your body with a smorgasbord of dance and moving with purpose. We will do familiar dances and some not so familiar\, all at your comfort level. Warning: this might change your life by positively shaping the way you think and feel. \nAges 11+. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Printing Adinkra Symbols (Julie Siftar)\n In 2021 I had the honor of visiting Ghana with the Witness Tree Institute of Ghana. https://www.witnesstreeinstitute.org/ Each summer their professional development trips for teachers create a time and space for deep learning through hands on experiences\, reflection and relationships in Ghana. In the birthplace of Adinkra\, the Ashanti Region\, I was introduced to this deeply meaningful and poetic cultural artform. Adinkra symbols express nuanced concepts\, characteristics and local proverbs. The symbols are printed on fabric\, carved into architecture and cast in brass and gold.In this 2 day mini\, we will create simplified Adinkra stamps for printing on paper\, as we reflect on the deeper meaning the symbols may have for us. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nChildren’s Program (if at least three children ages 5-11 are registered by December 4)\nWhy should the grown ups have all the fun? ECRS offers a completely integrated program for children ages 5-11 during two class periods. Many activities mirror the cooperative play that ECRS is built on. Children may learn new games\, create new crafts\, sing silly songs\, or even get the chance to share activities they have fun doing at home. Depending on age and interest\, they may take a field trip to experience the more kid-friendly adult classes! Children’s Program during the remaining class period will be cooperative-led. \nNote: Children are expected to stay for the entire program\, and are the responsibility of their guardians at all other times. To help finalize staffing\, this program will be offered only if at least three children ages 5-11 are registered by December 4 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Site\nThe Y at Watson Woods (Watson Homestead) is a conference center on 600 beautiful acres near Corning\, NY. SUMMARY:2023 Summer Weekend at Camp Onas
DESCRIPTION:Connect\, create and play - Camp Onas Summer Getaway \n June 9-11\, 2023\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Calling people of all ages and walks of life to share fun and fellowship at the ECRS Camping Weekend!\nWe’re excited this year to return to Camp Onas after a three-year Covid break. We know that the weekend will have a special blend of excitement and contentment and joy. \n\nNewcomers and ECRS veterans alike will enjoy the chance to focus on a theme in daytime classes – whether dancing\, singing\, informal dramatics\, crafts\, or games. Then at Evening Program\, everyone comes together as a community to dance\, sing\, play games\, and socialize over snacks. ECRS welcomes folks of every race\, color\, religion\, national origin\, age\, sexual orientation\, or gender identity to build community through music\, dance\, art\, and play. \nRegistrar: Gabriella (“Gabby”) FrisoneStaff Coordinator: Arnie Zacharias \nCome! And bring a friend!!\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Register now!\n \n \n \n \n \n Questions or problems? Email Gabby (gabriella.elem@gmail.com) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 2023 Class descriptions\nNo Experience Necessary for Any Class \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Paint Like Pollock (Kay Gering)\n Jackson Pollack made a huge splash in the art world when he displayed his style of “Action Painting”. Using a technique of dripping\, throwing\, and smearing paint as he moved around his canvas he created vibrant kinetic compositions. We’ll have 2 large canvasses (one black\, one white) laying on the ground to explore this method in a collaborative art experience. It’s messy but lots of fun! Plastic trash bags to cover clothing\, gloves\, and shoe caps will be available. It’s best to dress for a mess with this activity. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Active Games for Teens and Adults (Trevor "The Games Man")\n Although we won’t be running ALL the time\, this is an energetic\, spirited class. It takes teamwork to catch the runner in Line Cross\, and full attention for one player to hold everyone at bay in Smaug’s Jewels. Elbow Tag is a 1-on-1 chase\, and Rock/Paper/Scissors Tag a moment of sheer chaos for all! Dho Dho Dho requires breath control (really!)\, and May I Borrow Your Cat needs stealth and silliness. For breathers\, a few brain games will get that grey matter active while our bodies rest. All in all\, it’s sheer excitement\, a total blast\, loads of FUN\, and everybody wins! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Joy of Movement/Moving to Heal (Judi Powers)\n \n\n\n\nIf yoga\, healing movement\, martial arts\, and expressive dance arts had a baby it would be called NIA. Come explore the joy of movement\, dancing in sensation to NIA routines and moves. We will move and dance to an eclectic mix of music — learning the body’s way and your body’s way so you are renewed and restored. Anyone can attend. Typically done barefoot\, bring your yoga mat too — fun for everyone! \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n International Dance (Sharon Underberg-Davis)\n Learn and do circle and line dances from the US and a number of other countries\, varying in tempo\, style\, and music.  All levels of experience are welcome! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Spring Craft (Kay Gering)\n \n\n\n\n\n\nCreate spring-inspired compositions using colorful tissue paper brushed onto card stock with a liquid medium. Whether your joy at Spring’s arrival is expressed as abstract shapes\, representational flowers\, or anything in between\, you’ll find this approach gives beautiful results in an easy-to-learn technique. Do you have scraps of crinkled leftover colored tissue paper you don’t know what to do with? Bring it to class!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Mini Small Scenes (Glenn Lebwohl-Steiner)\n If you have seen a play or a movie and imagined yourself as one of the characters\, here’s your chance! Comedy\, drama\, we have it all. Using scripts\, extra short two- or three-person scenes will be rehearsed\, performed\, and discussed. Explore\, discover\, and create\, and become a character different from yourself.   \nClass size is limited to 16 people. Please register in advance. Ages 15+.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Party Games for All Ages (Trevor "The Games Man")\n In this fast-paced class\, we’ll play a wide variety of everybody-wins party games for your living room or around the dining table. They require little or no equipment\, require no special skills\, are non-strenuous\, yet are a rousing good time. Ice breakers\, circle games\, table games\, line games\, thinking games\, partner games\, large group games\, small group games\, noisy games\, silent games\, creative games\, storytelling games\, and probably even a few weird and unusual games\, too. From Standing Ovation to Sit Down and Be Quiet!\, from Shouting Proverbs to Picture Charades\, from Mirror Me to How to Start an Argument… everybody wins\, everybody plays\, and everybody has FUN! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Informal Dramatics (Arnie Zacharias)\n Have you ever wanted to be a king\, a witch\, or an Olympic star? Here’s your chance. Through a series of dramatic games\, exercises\, and skits\, we will perform for the group with an emphasis on pure fun… No previous experience is needed. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Children’s Program\nAges 5-11\nECRS offers a completely integrated program for children ages 5-11 during the morning class period on both Saturday and Sunday. Historically they have been used as a pre-digital way for fans to build community around bands or subcultures\, and they are often used as a tool for activism. We will bring colorful supplies\, good vibes\, and give you a loose structure to work with. We can’t wait to see what we’ll create together! \n \n \n \n \n \n Relax with Board & Word Games (Bonnie Ostrofsky / Jack Marquess)\n Enjoy relaxing with friends over new or old games. Please note that the following requirements are subject to change in accordance with updated CDC guidelines and national Covid case counts. \n1. Vaccination against Covid-19 is strongly encouraged but not required to attend Winter Adventure. \n2. You must present a negative Rapid Home Test result upon arrival. It is recommended that participants test PRIOR to traveling so as not to have to return home should one be asymptomatic with a positive test result (see #4 below). In addition\, participants are required to bring at least one unopened test with them to retest should symptoms occur during the event. **All attendees will be required to test again on day 3 of the event. ECRS will provide rapid tests** \n3. All participants will be strongly encouraged to fill in a COVID-19 symptoms checklist completed on the day of traveling to the event to rule out any COVID risk factors. Again\, it is recommended that this be done before leaving home so as not to have to return home if any of the risk factors are identified. \n4. Participants with symptoms or who are asymptomatic with a positive test result\, or who have been exposed to COVID within the last three days are asked to stay home. Your registration costs will be refunded. \n5. Any participant who develops symptoms (coughing\, runny nose\, sore throat\, muscle aches\, fever\, etc.) of COVID or other illnesses while at an ECRS event will either be required to return home or to quarantine at the event. If you return home\, registration costs will be refunded. Attendees who have quarantined and have two negative rapid tests (48 hrs apart) may rejoin the event provided they continue to mask. \n6. Masking is optional\, unless you are ill (and not COVID positive) then masking is strongly encouraged after quarantining. \n7. Flu shots are strongly recommended but not required. \n* https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/clinical-considerations/interim-considerations-us.html \nClick here to download a pdf version. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Class descriptions and leaders\nClick on the class title to get the full class description\, materials list and requirements (such as age and class size limits). Classes may be subject to change\, if necessary. You’ll be able to register for all classes right after you complete the event registration. Note that you will be able to swap classes the first night of WA. \n \n Morning first period classes\n \n \n \n \n \n All 4 days: International Folk Dance (Patricia Williams)\n Folk dances give us a way to connect with other cultures around the world. Learn a variety of dances\, fast and slow\, serene and joyful\, each chosen to move us in body\, mind\, and spirit. Great music\, great exercise\, great fun\, and no need to do them “right”! \n \n \n \n \n \n All 4 days: Woodcarving: Discovering your hidden potential (Stephen Kaye)\n Guidance in safety and usage of hand tools\, along with careful instruction\, provides an opportunity to learn skills not often available at one’s home. Come experience this creative activity in a small intergenerational community\, build self-confidence and “skills for life”\, i.e.\, calming the mind\, planning ahead\, learning to take small steps\, and creative risk-taking. \nWe’ll focus on the basic techniques of making wood utensils like spoons\, illustrating what tools go best at each stage. Unique and meaningful projects emerge\, from a variety of kitchen utensils\, simple musical instruments\, and magic wands. Carving allows for internal mindful exploration; we often challenge ourselves with each chop or slice of the subtractive process. Crafters learn skills alongside others\, chipping away at layers of wood and self-doubt. As we accomplish a successful stroke\, positive feedback is created\, which reinforces that technique. Carvers’ skills develop at their own pace; as participants become confident in their abilities\, they may help each other. I encourage carvers to recognize that techniques\, concentration\, and appreciation are often analogous to life skills\, meditation\, and reflection. While crafting as a community\, we model a supportive environment. When one’s hands are busy\, free-flowing conversations emerge\, building a willingness to share thoughts and feelings\, letting us all find the strength in the beauty within.   \nClass requirements/materialsClass size is limited to 12 StudentsAges 15+Participants must abide by all teacher instructions\, and must read and sign the Liability Release Agreement.  For those under 18\, a parent/guardian must sign the Liability Release Agreement on their behalf as well. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1\,2 - Storytelling (Frank Baskin)\n We are all storytellers. In this class\, we will tell stories about ourselves and the people we know. We will have time to develop some fiction and non-fiction. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1\,2 - Let's Make Music Together! (Bonnie Ostrofsky)\n Bring your voice and/or musical instrument so we can sing and play together for fun. Don’t play an instrument? Please come and sing with us! Or play a verse on a kazoo. We’ll let the group pick from a songbook of lyrics and chords: Folk\, rock\, funny songs\, pop\, ballads\, and some show tunes. I’ll also bring extra ukuleles. All levels are welcome. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3\,4 - Informal Dramatics (Lane Neubauer)\n Have you ever wanted to experience being someone other than yourself or perhaps an animal or inanimate object? Participants will be encouraged to use their imagination to bring whatever they choose to life. What does a table think when a flower is put on its top? How does a lion react when a rabbit tries to become its friend? How would the story go if your favorite fairy tale or fable had a different outcome? This class will consist of a variety of dramatic warm-ups\, exercises\, and games and will culminate each day with the creation of small group skits to be performed for the rest of the group. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3\,4 - A Capella Songs from the Sea and the City (Mark Schwartz)\n The class will focus on singing a variety of a capella songs\, mostly sea shanties and street corner doo-wop styles\, though we may add in a few other international songs as well. Some sharing/teaching is possible (consult the leader early at the event for more details). \nThink fun\, not perfection (though we will explore styles and harmonies). \n \n \n \n \n \n All four days: Children's Program\n Why should the grown-ups have all the fun? ECRS offers a completely integrated program for children ages 5-9 during two class periods. \nThere will also be childcare for ages 2-4. \n \n \n \n \n \n Morning\, second-period classes\n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1\,2 and/or days 3\,4: The Write Stuff (Beverly Pincus)\n If you can write\, you can WRITE! Through fun\, original writing exercises\, we will stimulate creativity and break through writing blocks. Want to learn what part of your brain houses your imagination? After some playful warmups\, you will be given a series of prompts to write what you know best – the stories of your lives. In a safe\, supportive\, and confidential environment you will share these stories with the group. This class is designed for people who have always wanted to write and never thought they could\, experienced writers with a regular writing practice\, and everyone in between. Come and discover your authentic voice and the written expression of your deep heart. \nOther class detailsClass size is limited to 14 peopleAges 15 and olderParticipants are encouraged to bring a journal or notebook. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1\,2: Late Night Dance (Celia Nicholson\, Carmen Siftar and Sonia Nicholson)\n Part of the ECRS Winter Adventure experience always includes some late-night dance festivities\, but after a certain hour of the night\, the dances aren’t always taught. Are you new to ECRS? Have you ever wanted to join in on the dancing on New Year’s Eve but don’t know the steps? Join the Siftar cousins to learn classics like New York\, New York\, Suavemente\, and Ciuleandra! Starting the week off strong\, we’re offering a 2-day mini so you can finish big!! No prerequisites are required – just come ready to dance and have FUN! Can’t wait! \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1\,2: Breakthrough Decluttering (Bari Prince)\n You have too much stuff! You want to free up the physical and emotional space it fills\, but don’t know where to start. In this class\, through group discussions\, exercises\, small group interactions and looking inward you will learn strategies to get you started on your decluttering journey and achieve sustainable results. Participants will define a “first step” decluttering project (maybe a closet\, desktop\, guest room\, etc. or a category such as books or clothes) and will leave with a customized action plan. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1\,2: Improv Theater (Howard Moody)\n Improv theater. Come and learn the basic skills of improv that are actually great skills for life. We will use simple theater games as playful and fun warm-ups\, then do a few comedy improv games with an audience. Always challenge by choice. Never tried improv before? This class is easy and fun for everyone. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3\,4: Scottish Country Dancing (Patricia Williams)\n This is social dancing and loads of fun! Dances vary from lively to slow and elegant\, simple to more complex\, all to beautiful Celtic music. Enjoy gender-free partnering and a new partner for each dance. The only requirements are the ability to walk quickly and smile to others along the way! \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3\,4: Inner Kindness (Heather Klemanski)\n Discover the incredible power of self-compassion and acquire practical techniques to gently quiet your inner critic\, all while embracing mindfulness tools that enhance self-awareness. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3\,4: Party Games for All Ages (Trevor the Games Man)\n Interactive\, non-strenuous\, everybody-wins party games for all ages including large and small group games\, partner games\, brain teasers\, table games\, minute mysteries and at least one loud\, noisy game! \n \n \n \n \n \n All four days: Cooperative Children's Program\n A Cooperative Children’s Program\, organized and staffed by parents and volunteers\, will be available during the late morning class period.  \n \n \n \n \n \n Afternoon classes\n \n \n \n \n \n All four days: Small Scenes (Glenn Lebwohl-Steiner)\n If you’ve seen a play or a movie and imagined yourself as one of the characters\, if you miss your time in the school play\, or if you just want to be someone else for a minute\, here is your chance! Comedy\, drama\, we have it all. Using scripts we will rehearse\, perform\, and discuss a collection of scenes. Explore\, discover\, and create! \n \n \n \n \n \n All four days: Posters with Wings (Teri Wilkinson)\n With paper\, paint\, print\, collage\, and our reservoirs of Creativity\, how can we enVision a more Equitable\, Sustainable\, Just and loving World for All Life on Our Mother Planet Earth? Posters have historically spoken for Just Causes: this one certainly merits WINGS to FLY! \nAdditional requirementsClass size is limited to 12 participantsAges 13 and up \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: ECRS Leadership and Theory - Creating the Magic (Lane Neubauer)\n What does it take to be an ECRS leader? How does ECRS leadership differ from leadership in other situations? This two-day class will examine what it takes to be an effective leader in any situation but will put particular emphasis on ECRS leadership philosophy. This will be an active\, interactive experience focusing on identifying one’s leadership abilities and skills. Some group dynamic theory will be included. This course will consist of discussions and experiential activities designed to develop\, identify\, and/or improve one’s leadership potential and impact. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: Active Games for Teens and Adults (Trevor the Games Man)\n Active\, non-sports\, strategy\, and field games that everybody wins! The games will challenge everyone in the group no matter what their skill levels. Heads & Tails Tag\, Bodyguard\, and Smaug’s Jewels are just a few all-time favorites! \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Collaborative Board Games (Max Kaye)\n Most popular board games are a competition between players to see who can win\, however\, there are some awesome games that call for all players to be on the same team in a race against an automatic game mechanic. Each class will start with a description of rules for a different collaborative board game and then a discussion about best practices for collaborating given each set of rules. Then we’ll play the board games in groups together\, and finally end class in a group discussion of what worked well and what could be improved about the game rules\, as well as the strategy players can adopt. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: The Children's March (Carolyn Peters Michener)\n “The 1963 Children’s March” in Dramatic Reading and SongsAn unprecedented number of demonstrations swept the country in 1963. Civil rights organizations demanded the right to vote\, full access to jobs and education\, and an end to segregated public accommodations. These demands were met with strong resistance and violence from local governments. “The Children’s March” is a dramatization of one 1963 event\, written by Charlotte Blake Alston in 2013 for the Singing City Choir. Class members will take parts for dramatic readings\, and we will all sing the accompanying songs. \nAdditional class requirementsInstruments welcomeBring an old toothbrush if you canClass size is limited to 16 \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: The Joy of Movement (Judi Powers)\n Explore and unleash your potential through joyful movement. Engage your senses and listen to your body with a smorgasbord of dance and moving with purpose. We will do familiar dances and some not-so-familiar ones\, all at your comfort level. Warning: this might change your life by positively shaping the way you think and feel. \nAdditional class requirementsAges 11+ \n \n \n \n \n \n Children's Program (all four days)\n Why should the grown-ups have all the fun? Learn a variety of dances\, fast and slow\, in circles and in lines\, serene\, and joyful\, and everything in between. Each dance will get us moving in body\, mind\, and spirit. Great music\, great exercise\, great fun\, great community—and no need to do them “right”! \n \n \n \n \n \n All 4 Days: The Write Stuff (Beverly Pincus)\n If you can write you can WRITE!! In this class we will use original exercises designed to stimulate creativity and break through writing blocks. Want to learn what part of your brain houses your imagination\, or visit a word museum? After some playful warmups\, through a series of prompts\, you will write what you know best —the stories of your lives. In a safe\, supportive\, and confidential environment you will share these stories with each other. There will also be an art component where we will create visually stunning art-poetry and prose. There will be an optional opportunity to read your work to the larger ECRS community. This class is appropriate for people who have always wanted to write and never thought they could\, experienced writers\, and everyone in between. Come and discover your authentic voice and the written expression of your heart. \nAge 16+. Class size is limited. Please register in advance. We will keep a wait list once we have reached capacity. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: Chair Yoga (Frank Baskin)\n Participants will use a chair. We will breathe and move within the confines of a chair. Each pose will be brief and we will experience a variety of poses. Each pose will be held for a short time. We will also do some standing near or with our chair. We will engage in most poses even with physical limitations. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: Sketch Comedy Bootcamp: From SNL to YOUR life (Allie Cliffe)\n Join the Winter Adventure Sketch Comedy Bootcamp to learn the secrets behind crafting hilarious sketches\, from dissecting ‘Weekend Update’ to writing and performing your own original comedy gold. We will cover the basics of sketch comedy (what it is and where it came from)\, including proven sketch templates. After viewing and deconstructing a few classic SNL sketches from the “Best of” archives\, we’ll brainstorm sketch ideas as a group and craft a piece (or two) to perform together in class and maybe even for others during free time. Participants are welcome to come as viewers\, writers\, and/or actors. No experience required\, just a willingness to laugh and learn! \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Building Better Groups - ECRS theory (Lane Neubauer)\n ECRS theory is based on working with groups to create cohesive\, cooperative experiences. Effective leadership is maximized toward these goals when the leader understands the mechanisms of how groups operate. The purpose of this theory course is to help participants develop a working knowledge of group dynamics and specifically how this is incorporated in ECRS leadership. Through a combination of experiential exercises\, structured fun activities\, and discussions\, participants will learn how to work with groups to foster a positive experience and how to create the magic that is unique to ECRS. \nClass size is limited. Please register in advance. We will keep a wait list once we have reached capacity. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Smorgasbord (Frank Baskin)\n This class will be an opportunity for any participant(s) to lead an activity (ex. singing\, games\, dance\, informal activity\, etc.). Each person will have the option of leadership feedback. Only those who volunteer will lead an activity. All participants will engage in activities but without any requirement to lead. If you know ahead of time what you plan to lead\, please let me know at baskinfrank19@gmail.com. You can change your mind. \n \n \n \n \n \n All 4 days: Children's Program/Preschool\n Why should the grown-ups have all the fun? ECRS offers a completely integrated program for children ages 5-11 during two class periods. Many activities mirror the cooperative play that ECRS is built on. Children may learn new games\, create new crafts\, sing silly songs\, or even get the chance to share activities they have fun doing at home. Depending on age and interest\, they may take a field trip to experience the more kid-friendly adult classes! Children’s Program is first and third periods only. A cooperatively-led Children’s Program staffed by parents and volunteers is 2nd period. \nNote: Children are expected to stay for the entire program\, and are the responsibility of their guardians at all other times. \nThere will also be childcare for ages 2-4. \n \n \n \n \n \n \nMorning\, second-period classes\n \n \n \n \n \n All 4 days: Musical Improv (Julie Lipson and Miles Crabtree)\n Bask in the glow of the spontaneous and the surprising as we create a musical– improvised together without any planning! We’ll learn some basics through improv games and musical play\, and then we’ll create our very own musical\, which will be unforgettable and immediately forgotten. Beyond very fun\, musical improv is a study in teamwork\, flexibility within structure\, and mutual support. No improv or musical experience needed. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2 and/or 3-4: Artful Hats and Fascinators (Julie Siftar)\n You are invited to come create small whimsical hats\, Fascinators and other festive head adornment in this 2-day mini course. Materials will include fancy papers\, feathers\, wire\, found twigs sprigs and more. Come enjoy the creative process and perhaps don the final product on New Year’s Eve! \n \nClass size is limited. Please register in advance. We will keep a wait list once we have reached capacity. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: Relax with Board and Table Games (Bonnie Ostrofsky)\n Enjoy relaxing with friends over new or old games. Play an old favorite\, or learn a new game. We’ll bring Bananagrams\, Upwords\, Scrabble\, Boggle\, Backgammon\, Quiddler\, Rummikub\, and more. You can also bring your favorite game to share. Depending on interest\, we can explore pencil and paper games and/or share examples of how to make board games such as 9 Man Morris and Chinese Friends. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: Aging Well At Any Age (Za McDonnell)\n This class is for anyone who hopes to age well. Ageist stereotypes are abundant in our society and they start from an early age. How we think about aging impacts our life in big and small ways. We’ll look at compelling new research on how the stereotypes operate\, compare our own experiences with ageism\, and explore how to change our own negative beliefs. This class will be a combination of learning the latest research on aging\, writing\, and group discussion. All ages welcome from teens and above. \nClass size is limited. Please register in advance. We will keep a wait list once we have reached capacity. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Scottish Country Dancing (Patricia Williams)\n This type of social dancing is loads of fun! Dances vary from lively to slow and elegant\, and from simple to more interesting patterns\, all to different types of Celtic music. Enjoy gender-free partnering and a new partner for each dance. The only requirements are the ability to walk quickly and smile to others along the way! \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Explore Your Encore - Build the Life You Want in Retirement! (Reed Dewey)\n Explore your post career life with others to gain knowledge and insights. Think about where you are now and where you want to go. Get to a clearer place on what you want your future to look like. Transitions in later life (age 50+) present their own challenges but also create new opportunities. Leave this Mini with new ideas\, insights\, and an action plan for 2025! We’ll have a combination of short presentations\, group discussions\, and breakouts. A number of resources and planning tools will be provided. This Mini is geared to those close to retirement or who have already retired from their main career. All ages welcome. \n \n \n \n \n \n All 4 days: Cooperative Children's Program/preschool\n Group activities organized and staffed by parents and volunteers. We will create a sign-up sheet and there will be a room designated with some materials that can be shared. \n \n \n \n \n \n \nAfternoon classes\n \n \n \n \n \n All 4 days: Small Scenes (Isaac and Glenn Lebwohl-Steiner)\n If you’ve seen a play or a movie and imagined yourself as one of the characters\, if you miss your time in the school play\, or if you just want to be someone else for a minute\, here is your chance! Comedy\, drama\, we have it all. Using scripts we will rehearse\, perform\, and discuss a collection of scenes. Explore\, discover\, and create! \nClass size is limited. Please register in advance. We will keep a wait list once we have reached capacity. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: ECRS Dance Favorites (Sharon Underberg)\n Have you ever been at late night dancing and wish you just knew some of the dances better\, or at all? Well\, this class is your opportunity. We will learn/review some of the popular dances we do later in the evening as well as some other ECRS favorites. There will be opportunities to request dances to add to our list! \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: How to Change the Games we All Play (Phyllis Lerner)\n Begin with a bit of games theory\, working through five elements: people\, equipment\, movement pattern\, rules and purpose. For example\, think about Hot Potato. Then\, using the 5 elements\, change it from a game that deals people out into an engaging and fun-filled experience. On the second day we will briefly review what we learned on the first day and then\, with live action\, collaboration and creativity\, find new\, different and even better ways to play. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Sing and Play Music Together (Bonnie Ostrofsky)\n Come sing with us! If you play a musical instrument\, bring it along so we can have fun singing and playing together. You could even play a verse on a kazoo! Our new ECRS songbook has lyrics and chords that include folk\, rock\, funny songs\, pop\, ballads\, and even some show tunes. We will take turns selecting songs\, and those who want to lead will have that opportunity. Extra ukuleles will be available. All levels and ages are welcome. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Re-Play - Taking What We Know and Making it Grow (Phyllis Lerner)\n Let’s work through play-FULL and purpose-FULL games and activities. From silence to singing\, from still to full action\, from hands free to plenty of equipment\, from regulated to rule breaking\, from participation to performance…what could we do when we’re all in it together? \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2 and/or 3-4: Zines! (Celia Nicholson and Carmen Siftar)\n In this class we will be making zines (short for magazine) together!! What is a zine\, you may ask? A zine does not have any strict rules or styles\, but in general\, they are usually small paper books that anyone can make about anything they’re interested in. In your zine you might share small works of art\, create a manifesto\, develop a story\, or share information. Historically they have been used as a pre-digital way for fans to build community around bands or subcultures\, and they are often used as a tool for activism. We are offering two minis where you can choose-your-own-adventure for a 2-day project or a 4-day project. In other words\, come to one mini or two! We will bring colorful supplies\, good vibes\, and give you a loose structure to work with. We can’t wait to see what we’ll create together! \nClass size is limited. Please register in advance. We will keep a wait list once we have reached capacity. \n \n \n \n \n \n All four days: Children's Program/Preschool\n Why should the grown-ups have all the fun? Whether fast or slow\, in circles or in lines\, serene\, joyful\, or anything in between\, every dance can move us in body\, mind\, and spirit. Great music\, great exercise\, great fun\, great community! No partner necessary\, and absolutely no need to do them “right”! Age 12+. \n \n \n \n \n \n All 4 days: Leadership Playground (Kim Neubauer)\n Welcome experienced and aspiring leaders! We’ll unpack ECRS’s magic and emerge with insights\, ideas\, sharpened skills\, and greater self-awareness. You are encouraged to propose – in advance – an activity (game\, dance\, song\, craft\, or discussion) you’d like to lead (send to kneubauer123@yahoo.com). Come to play\, lead\, reflect\, learn\, and to become an integral part of ECRS’s future. Age 15+. \nClass size is limited. Please register in advance. We will keep a wait list once we have reached capacity. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: Chair Yoga (Judi Powers)\n Stretch your body\, relax and feel renewed with Chair Yoga. Yoga poses and exercises done in a chair or standing next to a chair. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a water bottle. Age 12+. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Breathe and Be (Heather Klemanski)\n This 2-day class is a gentle introduction to mindfulness through breath\, easy movement\, and self-compassion. You’ll explore simple practices to slow down\, reconnect\, and manage stress. The final session will close with a calming sound bath. No experience is needed. Come as you are. Age 12+. \n \n \n \n \n \n All 4 days: Children's Program/Preschool (Lisa Natale)\n Why should the grown-ups have all the fun? ECRS offers a completely integrated program for children ages 2-11 during two class periods. \n \n \n \n \n \n Morning\, second-period classes\n \n \n \n \n \n All 4 days: Sketch 101: From Blank Page to Big Laughs (Allie Cliffe)\n Turn your everyday observations into laugh-out-loud sketches! You’ll learn the fundamentals of sketch comedy writing through a proven step-by-step process. We’ll work in small groups to craft original three-minute scenes from the funny moments hiding in your daily life and (if we have time) analyze classic sketches from Saturday Night Live and other comedy legends for inspiration. No experience required—just bring your sense of humor and willingness to play. Age 12+. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: Sacred Circle Dances (Sharon Underberg)\n Circle Dancing is a folk art\, a new branch from the thick old trunk of International Folk Dance. Danced together around a central focus point\, these tend to be simpler dances\, for a longer period of time. This encourages each of us to allow ourselves to be held by the circle\, and to sink into the rhythmic movement\, allowing our minds to relax. We will learn a number of these dances and\, if the group desires\, create a sacred circle dance of our own. Open to all levels of experience and fitness. Age 12+. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: Games! (Lane Neubauer with Heather Klemanski assisting) \n Lots of games! Some new\, some old\, some active\, some quiet\, lots of laughter\, ALL FUN! This class will consist of games for all ages and abilities. It will include ladership strategies so participants will be able to bring the ECRS philosophy of inclusion and fun into the groups they are part of outside of Winter Adventure. Age 12+. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: Crafts: Deck the Halls (Kay Gering)\n Join the merriment as we create decor for our New Year’s Eve celebration. Follow preplanned designs or bring your festive imaginations to make a winter wonderland for a Peace- and Wonder-full New Year. Age 12+. \nClass size is limited. Please register in advance. We will keep a wait list once we have reached capacity \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Empathy Games (Rob Eames)\n In this interactive workshop\, we’ll use empathy games to explore interpersonal connection & support. Through play\, personal reflection\, and group discovery\, we’ll get a felt sense of what it means to be accompanied by others. Each activity builds toward deeper connection and a shared understanding of the meaning & preciousness of interdependence. Come curious\, leave connected. Age 12+. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Joy of Movement: Moving to Heal (Judi Powers)\n Let’s Dance and stretch your body’s way. Music and dance will be fun\, playful\, and healing. Come enjoy! All levels invited\, you will be encouraged to modify to your body’s needs. All ages welcome.  \n \n \n \n \n \n All 4 days: Cooperative Children's Program/preschool\n Group activities organized and staffed by parents and volunteers. We will create a sign-up sheet and there will be a room designated with some materials to share. \n \n \n \n \n \n Afternoon classes\n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: Relax with Board - Word Games (Bonnie Ostrofsky)\n Enjoy relaxing with friends over new or old games. Play an old favorite\, or learn a new game. We’ll bring Bananagrams\, Upwords\, Scrabble\, Boggle\, Backgammon\, Quiddler\, Rummikub\, and more. You can also bring your favorite game\, teaching others the basic rules and strategies and show them why you love to play it! Age 12+. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: Small Scenes (Isaac Lebwohl-Steiner)\n If you’ve seen a play or a movie and imagined yourself as one of the characters\, if you miss your time in the school play\, or if you just want to be someone else for a minute\, here is your chance! Comedy\, drama\, we have it all. Using scripts (no memorizing required!) we will rehearse\, perform\, and discuss a collection of scenes. Explore\, discover\, and create! Age 12+. \nClass size is limited. Please register in advance. We will keep a wait list once we have reached capacity. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 1-2: Hat Game (Josh and Rachael Silverbauer)\n The Hat Game is equal parts ice-breaker\, improv lab\, and rapid-fire creativity workshop. Before we begin\, every participant secretly writes a brief activity prompt (anything from “re-enact a famous movie scene” to “design a new yoga pose”) and drops it into—yes—a literal hat. Across two sessions we draw prompts at random and bring them to life\, using structured facilitation techniques that turn spontaneity into a learnable skill set. Age 12+. \nClass size is limited. Please register in advance. We will keep a wait list once we have reached capacity. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Improv Games (Isaac Lebwohl-Steiner)\n Are you ready? No? Perfect! Come make it up as you go and fake it until you realize you’ve already made it! We’ll learn a little\, play a lot\, and laugh too much. No experience with improvisational theater needed; newcomers and experienced improvisers are equally welcome. Age 12+. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Explore Your Encore (Reed Dewey)\n Explore your post career ideas for life with others to gain knowledge and insights. Think about where you are now and where you want to go. Geared to anyone age 50 and older – even if it’s been a while since you’ve retired. Life transitions in later life present their own challenges but also create new opportunities. Leave this Mini with new ideas\, insights\, and an action plan for 2026! We’ll have a combination of short presentations\, group discussions\, and breakouts. A number of resources and planning tools will be provided. Age 50+. \n \n \n \n \n \n Days 3-4: Rock Opera Build (Josh and Rachael Silverbauer)\n This mini-lab guides participants through the creative arc of producing an original rock opera—from seed idea to song building. We’ll explore narrative structure\, map story beats to musical moments\, write lyrics that drive plot\, and experiment with building songs that give characters their own voice. If you have an idea Josh will help you put it to music and Rachael will help you find the words! No prior music theory required—just enthusiasm and a willingness to sing a rough draft. Age 12+. \nClass size is limited. Please register in advance. We will keep a wait list once we have reached capacity. \n \n \n \n \n \n All four days: Children's Program/Preschool (Lisa Natale)\n Why should the grown-ups have all the fun? ECRS offers a completely integrated program for children ages 2-11 during two class periods. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Covid/communicable disease policy\n During the week before you come to Winter Adventure\, please mask when in crowded indoor spaces and monitor your health. \nIf you are sick\, we ask you not to come. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Winter Adventure Refund Policy\n We understand that plans can change. SUMMARY:2026 Summer Weekend at Camp Onas
DESCRIPTION:Connect\, create and play - Onas Camping Weekend\n June 12-14\, 2026\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Calling people of all ages and walks of life to share fun and fellowship at the ECRS summer camping weekend. \nWe’re excited for another fun-filled weekend at Camp Onas\, a special blend of excitement\, contentment\, and joy. \n\nNewcomers and ECRS veterans alike will enjoy the focus on dancing\, singing\, informal dramatics\, crafts\, or games during daytime classes. Then\, at Evening Program\, everyone comes together as a community to dance\, sing\, play games\, and socialize over snacks. \nECRS welcomes folks of every race\, color\, religion\, national origin\, age\, sexual orientation\, or gender identity to build community through music\, dance\, art\, and play. \nRegistrar: Gabby Frisone\, registration@ecrs.orgWeekend Coordinators: Arnie Zacharias\, Karen WisniaQuestions or problems? This is a true trash to treasure experience! \n \n \n \n \n \n Nature Walking in Time (Kirk Wattles)\n We will explore Camp Onas\, pausing here and there to recognize signs beneath our feet and from trees and other plant life that can tell us something of what’s happening over time\, considering that people are now a part of the story. We now live in the Anthropocene Epoch\, having made irrevocable changes at least at the surface of the planet. And life goes on. This is a rain or shine event. Imagine Rock-Paper-Scissors with some added features or a new way of expressing it such as Infinity\, Cheerleaders\, Evolution\, Giants-Wizards-Dwarves\, Lizard-Spock\, or any other game that challenges you to predict what the other player will do. But that’s not all\, we will also play new versions of many other games including old worn out games like Tic Tac Toe\, Charades\, Bingo\, and String of Pearls. \n \n \n \n \n \n Line Dancing (Debbie Karl)\n Join us to enjoy a variety of fun line dances set to Pop music\, Latin\, Swing\, and more. All dances will be taught – no partner or experience required. \n \n \n \n \n \n Informal Dramatics (Arnie Zacharias)\n Discover the dramatic bug within you. Help create a skit. Play a dramatic game. Join in a dramatic exercise. Your imagination is all that is needed. \n \n \n \n \n \n Free time and late night activities\n \n \n \n \n \n Water games (Jack Marquess)\n An ECRS Camp Onas tradition.   Games\, activities\, and dances adapted for the swimming pool.  Bring one to share or request a favorite!  Age 5+.    \n \n \n \n \n \n Make Music Together (Bonnie Ostrofsky)\n Bring your voice and/or musical instrument so we can have fun singing and playing together.
